ASSOCIAZIONE ANT

🇬🇧 The National Cancer Association (ANT) was founded in 1978 and has 530 professionals who follow patients with terminal cancer. Their work consists in being close to the sick and family in the final phase of the disease, not only from the point of view of palliative care but also from the psychological one, in facing such a delicate phase of life. The need to document the difficulties of patients and professionals, at a time like the one we are experiencing now because of the pandemic from Covid-19, arises from a fact: this situation overshadows many problems that can cause a very high number of victims. The focus on cancer prevention and treatment, since the outbreak of the pandemic, has disappeared throughout the country: in the first nine months of 2020 there were over two million fewer screenings and this can obviously cause a substantial increase in mortality. In the province of Brescia, the epicenter of the pandemic in early 2020, the situation is not better: the president of Ant Brescia, Dr Francesco Baldo, explains that from February to September 2020 the situation was catastrophic, with full hospitals, delayed or missed diagnoses and screenings and a great fear of taking the Covid and infecting patients. Franco, Angela, Graziano, Stefania, are just some of the patients or family members who have needed and are grateful to Ant for his tireless work; some of them are no longer there, Others continue to rely on doctors and nurses who never fail to give careful and precise care. In their stories there are also the difficulties of every day, linked to the daily life of those who live alone, or the relief of those who have family close to them, who assist them day and night without ever missing a support.
This work was carried out to try to tell a hidden reality, in the shadows and never subject to the attention of the mass media.
The pandemic has been and still is a tragedy, a catastrophe, but within it there are folds that often escape and are just as painful.Â
